Makes me furious EVERY TIME. Old subject - but still needs to be talked about. So go ahead, tell your friends that Koreans abort female fetuses and shame, shame, shame some bad people today.
I'll post something happy tomorrow. Maybe a photo of me and my FIVE SISTERS???
Grrrr. I take it personally. I do.

Same deal in India (although, technically finding out the gender of your baby prior to birth is illegal, people still do through various means...and the orphanages are predominately girls). My parents have always been proud of their two girls (me and my sis), and would always loudly answer - "NO! WHY?" if someone asked them if they wanted a boy.
Ugh.
Yeah, I remember growing up hearing people ask my mom if she wasn't able to have any more children - because she stopped at 2 girls. When she says that she only wanted 2 children, they eye ME (the second childe) and will wonder out loud why my mom didn't just 'get rid' of me and try again for a boy. :-) I guess my mom was a little ahead of her time - she'd always say that girls can do whatever boys can do just as well and that she doesn't need to have a boy child, only the ones God has given her.
ANYWAY... I'm with you - this subject and this notion ALWAYS pisses me off...
It was quite disturbing, and while I'm not that fond of posting "negative things" about Korea, I though that this issue was particularly shocking and worthy of note.
I wonder how it's going to play out, and I'd be interested in seeing how it relates to how long that particular family has been in the US/Canada, and if it is less prevalent in second and third generation (and so on) families. While my gut says it's probably a bigger issue in first generation families, that's just a hunch and I'd like to see how it breaks down. I wonder if it's a case of education for incoming immigrants as to local social norms and ethics and whether or not such "re-education" itself is really ethical. Life is complicated in a pluralist post-modern society.
It's even illegal in Canada (or some parts of it anyway) to find out what the gender of the child is. The first time I heard about it was living in BC, where there is a large Asian population, but I don't know if it's the newly immigrated who want to know or if it continues on through later generations.
And everybody should be pissed off about it.
On a lighter note: I like the new template.
